The Purpose of this Study

The purpose of this study of Revelation is to make Revelation accessible to the ordinary reader. I believe that making it accessible matters because without Revelation the Biblical story remains incomplete.  it would be like writing a novel without an ending or a play without a final act. Revelation ties up the loose ends of the Biblical narrative, reminding its readers that God has a plan for the restoration of all creation through returning creation to its original glory in which God and humanity live side by side.

Why a Trilogy?

What is in the Study?

I am approaching this study of Revelation as a trilogy because the story neatly divides itself as such. As a fan of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, it occurred to me that Revelation follows the same basic pattern as Tolkien's story.  There is the creation of a fellowship, there is a rise of evil which imitates and mocks humanity,  and then the return of the true king.  Though I have no proof, I often wonder if Revelation was not somehow in the back of Tolkien's mind as he wrote his stories.
This study contains:
1) A video of each portion of the trilogy so that readers can listen to and "see" the story in order  to gain a feel for the flow of the trilogy.

2) Short one page summaries of each chapter, which attempt to give a "balcony" view of the role of the chapter in telling the story, while trying to stay out of the "weeds" which can often bog readers down. There are also three application questions at the end of the lesson.

3) A more detailed set of printable chapter notes for those who would like to know more. These notes examine the chapter in-depth and offer multiple discussion questions for individuals or study groups

Who Am I?

My name is John Judson and I am a Presbyterian Pastor who has been studying Revelation and Apocalyptic literature for the past 35 years.  I have taught many single-day seminars on Revelation, which forms the basis for this site.  I decided that in this time of COVID-19 I would put my thoughts and notes online for others to see and use. I hope that they prove helpful in seeing Revelation through new eyes.
